Brownfruit Tree

This short fruit tree grows up to 7 feet (2.1 meters) tall and lives for up to 30 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 82 years old. It is not very resistant to disease and destructive insect infestation.

It has a wide, wonky trunk covered in paper-thin, silky, light brown bark, and inside, the flexible wood is burgundy-brown.

The abundance of branches trail down across the ground and are covered with large amounts of small, sickle shaped leaves with wavy edges. The leaves themselves are lime and grey.

In early spring, it produces many clusters of tiny, brown blossoms with 9 teardrop-shaped shaped petals. They are hardy and have a weak scent that smells like freshly baked bread.

In mid-summer it produces tiny, circular fruit. The crispy red skin is peel-able and edible when roasted; it is sweet and sour, and the very soft brown flesh is sweet and dry. The hazel seed is very large and is in the centre of the fruit.

The roots spread far and go deep underground, and overall the tree is sturdy, flexible, and difficult to uproot or break.

Forests of this species feature well-spaced trees, with the space between them filled with thick undergrowth.
