Burgundy Starflower

Flower type: Perennial (Stores water in its stem)

This modest-sized flower grows up to 7 inches (18 cm) tall. Its burgundy stem is very thin and straight, and the huge, emerald leaves are very narrow and elongated with serrated edges. The leaves grow from the base and are the same length as the stem.

Many giant flowers grow in drooping bunches like grapes. The flowers are 3 cm (1.2 inches) wide, with each petal a slightly different shade of slate. The flower head is shaped like a star made up of many widely spaced, round-tipped petals. They are sturdy.

It has a mildly strong scent that smells like meat, and it has an average amount of pollen; it does not cause any allergic reactions. It is pollinated by a small species of bird, but is also visited by a variety of insects.

It is difficult to kill and will quickly regrow if cut.
