Violet

Flower type: Perennial (Stores water in its leaves)

This modest-sized flower grows up to 1.6 feet (48 cm) tall. Its violet or aquamarine stems grow in bunches of 4 and are very thin and straight, and the small, pink-red leaves are broad, flat with jagged edges. Many leaves grow along the entire length of the stem.

Each stem splits 4 to 6 times; a single tiny flower grows at the end of each split. The flowers are 6 cm (2.4 inches) wide, with petals that are black on the edges and light grey at the center. The flower head is shaped like a bowl with 21 widely spaced, narrow petals. They are very delicate.

It has a strong scent that smells like petrol, and it has lots of pollen. It is pollinated by the wind, but is also visited by a small species of bird.
