Spiked Bloodflower

Succulent type: Caudiciform (Stores water in the thickened base of its stem)

This modest-sized caudiciform grows up to 3 feet (91.4 cm) tall. The needle-like stem is gray-green, and is covered in handfuls of rigid deep green spines. The straight, crimson trunk can grow to as much as 3 feet (91.4 cm) in diameter in the middle. Its moss green branches are long and slender and start growing three quarters of the way up the stem.

The very large amounts of toothed-edged, broad, flat leaves are found in blood red, indigo and turquoise varieties. They are flimsy, but do not detach easily.

It is steady-growing, taking 19 months to reach maturity. Once mature, and only under the right conditions, several flowers with solid cyan petals decorated with black dots and a orange central disk grow at the top, reappearing after 9 years, but only when the conditions are right again. The flower head is shaped like a tube made up of 19 raised, round-tipped petals. It has a weak scent that smells like vomit.

The caudiciform's skin is tough, the black flesh is smooth, and the hazel sap is thin.

The sap is edible and extremely savoury.
