Caramel Trumpet Tree

This short fruit tree grows up to 7 feet (2.1 meters) tall and lives for up to 30 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 68 years old. It is very susceptible to disease and insect infestation.

It has a branched, straight trunk covered in fine, cracked, brown and grey bark, and inside, the flexible wood is black.

The branches trail down to the ground and are covered with very large amounts of small, spiral leaves with jagged edges. The leaves themselves are found in copper, pale orange and cyan varieties.

In early spring, it produces large amounts of tiny, yellow blossoms with pleated petals with a trumpet-shaped floral cup. They are sturdy and have a delicate scent that smells like coconut.

In mid-summer it produces small, oval fruit. The clammy caramel skin is tough and bitter and sour, and the soft pink flesh is salty and powdery. The caramel seed is small and sits at the top of the fruit.

The roots form a tightly packed ball, and overall the tree is rigid and brittle.

Forests of this species feature the trees packed together densely, with patches of undergrowth between them.
