Waterstem Cherry

Fruit Tree type: Deciduous (Stores water in its stem)

This short fruit tree grows up to 5 feet (1.5 meters) tall and lives for up to 25 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 64 years old. It is somewhat resistant to disease and destructive insect infestation.

It has a wide, angular trunk covered in very thick, smooth, burgundy and brown bark, and inside, the very hard wood is black with white speckles.

The branches are very long and thin and are covered with thick bunches of huge, very thick leaves with rounded edges. The leaves themselves are magenta on the sides and blood red at the center.

In early spring, it produces hundreds of tiny, light grey blossoms with pleated petals with a tube-like floral cup. They are very delicate and have a powerful scent that smells like cherry.

In late autumn it produces , asymmetrical fruit. The crispy white skin is peel-able and inedible, and the slightly crunchy magenta flesh is sweet and very dry. The brilliant yellow seeds are tiny and are located in the centre of the fruit.

The roots are fine and grow in a large web, and overall the tree is sturdy and rigid.

Forests of this species feature well-spaced trees, with grassy ground between them.

It absorbs an exceptionally large amount of water each day.
The colour changes depends on whether the soil is acidic or alkaline.
It is suitable for creating tough, hard-wearing textiles
