Firevine

Shrub type: Deciduous (Grows upwards by clinging to almost any surface.)

This modest-sized shrub grows up to 3 feet (91.4 cm) tall and lives for around 62 years. It is somewhat resistant to disease and destructive insect infestation.

It has numerous branched, crooked stems covered in rough, light brown bark, and the wood inside is mahogany-coloured.

The branches trail down across the ground with hundreds of twigs that and are covered with large amounts of huge, long, tapering, leaves with toothed edges. The leaves themselves are silver with grey tips, robust and sticky.

In early spring it produces handfuls of small, red blossoms with teardrop-shaped petals with a trumpet-shaped floral cup. They are sturdy and have an overpowering scent that smells like bonfire smoke.

In early autumn tiny oval fruits ripen. The leathery magenta skin is thin and edible when roasted; it is savoury, and the very soft blood red flesh is bitter and dry. The light grey seed is small and sits at the top of the fruit.

It is bio-luminescent.
It is suitable for creating fine, soft textiles
It is overwhelmingly resistant to fire damage.
