Thorned Azurevine
Succulent type: Caudiciform (Stores water in the thickened base of its stem)This small caudiciform grows up to 11 feet (3.4 meters) tall. The tapering stem is pink-red, and is covered in sharp spines. It has a wavy, thick, gnarled, yellow trunk atop a round stilted platform of ridged, exposed roots. The branches are round and yellow and trail down towards the ground.
The irregular-edged, stiff, pointed leaves are found in bronze, light brown and green varieties. They are tough, and detach easily.
It is very slow growing, taking 28 years to reach maturity. Once mature, a handful of flowers, with petals that are vibrant blue on the edges and ashy purple at the center, grow at the top, reappearing every year. The flower head is shaped like a sphere made up of handfuls of raised, narrow petals. It has an intense scent that smells like pine needles.
The caudiciform's skin is thick, the azure flesh is rubbery, and the gentle orange sap is thin and causes vomiting if consumed.
It is difficult to cut through.
The sap is edible and extremely sweet.
It is suitable for creating tough, hard-wearing textiles
