Coniapple

This average-sized fruit tree grows up to 15 feet (4.6 meters) tall and lives for up to 35 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 51 years old. It is susceptible to disease and destructive insect infestation.

It has a flexible, angular trunk covered in hard, cracked, mahogany-coloured bark, and inside, the medium-dense wood is yellow.

The numerous branches are tall, rigid and upright and are covered with very large amounts of large, fan-like leaves with jagged edges. The leaves themselves are magenta and light grey.

In early spring, it produces a thick sheet of giant, violet blossoms with slender, pointed petals with a bell-shaped floral cup. They are hardy and have no scent.

In early winter it produces small, cuboid fruit. The rubbery gentle red skin is delicate and inedible, and the very soft light grey flesh is salty and oily. The vibrant red seeds are large and are scattered throughout the fruit.

The roots are shallow and widely spread, and overall the tree is sturdy and rigid.

Forests of this species feature trees spaced far apart, with clear space between them.
