Chocolate Hazel Cupflower
Flower type: Biennial (Grows along the ground or other low surfaces.)This small flower grows up to 6 inches (15 cm) tall. Its brown stem is very thick and splits into numerous branching stems halfway up, and the huge, silver leaves are stiff, pointed with wavy edges. Many leaves grow at the base of the stem, and more leaves alternate on the stem from about halfway up, up to the flower head.
Each stem splits 1 to 4 times; a single small flower grows at the end of each split. The flowers are 2 cm (0.8 inches) wide, with petals that are generally hazel; each flower tends to be a variation of this colour. The flower head is shaped like a cup with 54 raised, narrow petals. They are hardy.
It has a powerful scent that smells like chocolate, and it has excessive amounts of pollen,but it does not cause many allergic reactions. It is pollinated by a small species of bird.
