Waterstem Blossom
Flower type: Annual (Stores water in its stem)This large flower grows up to 5.9 feet (1.8 meters) tall. Its slate stem is very thick and straight with a curved tip, and the small, lime green leaves are wide with toothed edges. The leaves alternate on the stem from about halfway up, up to the flower head.
5 to 10 small flowers grow on alternate sides up the length of the stem. The flowers are 54 cm (21.3 inches) wide, with solid slate petals decorated with purple lines and a blood red central disk. The flower head is an uncoordinated mess of 60 petals. They detach easily.
It has a weak scent that smells like rich perfume, and it has copious amounts of pollen. It is pollinated by the wind.
It can survive a long time without water.
