Watermelon Tree

This short fruit tree grows up to 7 feet (2.1 meters) tall and lives for up to 10 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 21 years old. It is not very resistant to disease and destructive insect infestation.

It has a flexible, curved trunk covered in thin, waxy, black with white speckled bark, and inside, the very hard wood is burgundy-brown.

The excessive amount of branches are short stubs and are covered with small amounts of small, broad, flat leaves with serrated edges. The leaves themselves are found in dark grey, dark brown and gentle red varieties.

In early spring, it produces copious amounts of medium-sized, white blossoms with 2 circular shaped petals. They detach easily and have an intense scent that smells like old shoes.

In early winter it produces tiny, spherical fruit. The crispy brown skin is thick and sweet and savoury, and the crunchy sky blue flesh is spicy and juicy. The caramel seed is small and is in the centre of the fruit.

The roots are shallow and widely spread, and overall the tree is sturdy and rigid.

Forests of this species feature trees spaced far apart, with patches of undergrowth between them.
