This orange-yellow moss is commonly found blanketing tiny areas In marshes.
It is colossal, growing up to 1.7 feet (51 cm) tall. It forms in extensive patches and they spread and grow quickly, and is very rigid; it struggles more than most during dry spells.
When mature, emerald shield-shaped capsules grow at the end of short, lime green sporophytes, eventually opening up during the early winter to release dozens of spores.

The leaves are high in natural sugars.
It is suitable for use as a construction material
The trunk and branches are covered in large spikes.
