This short vine is a very fast growing plant, with the largest known specimen reaching a length of 9 feet (2.7 meters) and growing as high as 324 feet (98.8 meters).

It takes 5 months for the sky blue stems to mature, by which point they can have a diameter of 2 cm (0.8 inches) and are rough and prickly.

The 9 pointed, waxy leaves reach up to 5 inches (13 cm) in length. They are magenta and pastel blue, and have jagged edges.

During late spring, the vine produces handfuls of tiny yellow flowers, and during the mid-summer, after flowering, it produces plenty of tiny seed pods.
