Starlight Purple

Flower type: Biennial (Stores water in the thickened base of its stem)

This modest-sized flower grows up to 8 inches (20 cm) tall. Its pink-red stem is wispy and straight, and the tiny, lime green leaves are asymmetrical with toothed edges. The leaves alternate on the stem.

Each stem splits 1 to 7 times; a single small flower grows at the end of each split. The flowers are 28 cm (11.0 inches) wide, with alternating petals of purple and white, with a silver central disk. The flower head is shaped like a star with 59 widely spaced, narrow petals. They are hardy.

It has a delicate scent that smells like pot-purri, and it has copious amounts of pollen. It is pollinated by the wind, but is also visited by one species of insect in particular.
