Copperberry

Fruit Tree type: Deciduous (Stores water in its stem)

This small fruit tree grows up to 7 feet (2.1 meters) tall and lives for up to 15 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 34 years old. It is susceptible to disease and destructive insect infestation.

It has a stocky, straight trunk covered in fine, wrinkled, copper-coloured bark, and inside, the soft wood is pale brown.

The numerous branches are very short and slender and are covered with thick bunches of miniature, long, narrow leaves with smooth edges. The leaves themselves are solid red with green splotches.

In early spring, it produces clusters of small, lilac blossoms with 2 flame-shaped shaped petals. They are hardy and have a mildly strong scent that smells like pineapple.

In early summer it produces very large, long, curved fruit. The smooth magenta skin is peel-able and inedible, and the crunchy aquamarine flesh is sweet and spicy and dry. The white seeds are large and are located in the centre of the fruit.

The roots are long and grow straight down, and overall the tree is rigid and weak, and breaks apart easily.

Forests of this species feature trees spaced far apart, with clear space between them.
