It takes 5 years for the magenta stems to mature, by which point they have tangled themselves into thick mats with a diameter of 1.4 feet (43 cm) and are smooth and fuzzy.
The spiral, leathery leaves reach up to 9 inches (23 cm) in length. They are amber and purple, and have smooth edges.
During late spring, the bine produces copious amounts of tiny blue flowers.
It can survive a very long time without water.
It actively smothers and kills off other plants.
