Caramel

This large shrub grows up to 7 feet (2.1 meters) tall and lives for around 21 years. It is very resistant to destructive insect infestation but susceptible to disease.

It has many branched, curved stems covered in thick, ridged, burgundy and brown bark, and the wood inside is pale yellow.

The branches are tall, rigid and upright that and are covered with small amounts of tiny, long, narrow, leaves with serrated edges. The leaves themselves are purple on the edges and black at the center, delicate and sticky.

In late spring it produces lots of giant, caramel blossoms with perforated petals with a tube-like floral cup. They are hardy and have a strong scent that smells like soap.

In early autumn small asymmetrical fruits ripen. The smooth turquoise skin is thin and edible when cooked; it is bitter, and the soft aquamarine flesh is sweet and powdery. The brown seed is large and sits at the top of the fruit.
