Indigo

This modest-sized fruit tree grows up to 12 feet (3.7 meters) tall and lives for up to 40 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 81 years old. It is very resistant to disease and destructive insect infestation.

It has a thick, wonky trunk covered in thick, waxy, brown-green bark, and inside, the very hard wood is silver.

The thin clumps of branches are very short and thin and are covered with copious amounts of large, very thick leaves with toothed edges. The leaves themselves are either white or hazel, with brown splotches.

In early spring, it produces thousands of medium-sized, indigo blossoms with asymmetrical petals with a trumpet-shaped floral cup. They fall easily and have a strong scent that smells like freshly washed clothes.

In early winter it produces , pleated fruit. The soft cyan skin is delicate and edible when boiled; it is savoury, and the slightly crunchy grey flesh is sweet and salty and syrupy. The red seed is large and is in the centre of the fruit.

The roots are thick and spread across the surface, as well as underground, and overall the tree is sturdy, flexible, and difficult to uproot or break.

Forests of this species feature trees spaced far apart, with the space between them filled with thick undergrowth.
