Mailaedle Codtamer was one of the greatest folk heroes in the history of Ezuler. Adventurer, explorer, storyteller, troublemaker, and champion of ordinary people, she became a living legend during her own lifetime. Though many details of her exploits have become difficult to separate from myth, few figures have left a greater mark upon Ezulerlander culture.

Born on Prismont 14, Year 1472, Mailaedle grew up in the young nation of Ezuler, which had been founded only twenty-three years earlier following the civil war that separated it from Kirikhur. Her childhood coincided with the reign of High Chief Dorobonny Shimmerknaps and the formative years of the nation. From an early age she displayed a fierce independence and a tendency to wander far from home.

Stories from her youth describe her climbing cliffs that adults feared to approach, sneaking aboard merchant vessels to explore distant shores, and repeatedly returning home with strange animals that she insisted would make excellent pets. Whether these tales are true or exaggerated, they established the image of Mailaedle as a fearless and unconventional spirit.

On Eventember 23, Year 1500, Mailaedle first rose to prominence. Contemporary accounts simply record that "a Gnomish hero arises," but later histories provide greater detail. During a period of severe flooding in western Ezuler, Mailaedle reportedly organized rescue efforts that saved hundreds of lives. Other stories claim she slew a monstrous river beast, uncovered a smuggling operation that preyed upon isolated villages, or recovered a priceless artifact believed lost for generations. Whatever the precise event, by the end of the year her name was known throughout the nation.

Over the following decades Mailaedle became the subject of countless stories and songs. She traveled extensively throughout Ezuler and neighboring lands, acting as explorer, negotiator, treasure-seeker, and occasional mercenary. Unlike many heroes of her age, she showed little interest in titles or political office. Instead, she preferred adventure and the company of ordinary people.

Mailaedle became particularly famous for her sharp wit and love of practical jokes. Unfortunately, these same traits eventually led to one of the most notorious scandals in Ezulerlander history.

On Stellary 15, Year 1517, Mailaedle Codtamer was officially banned from every tavern in Ezuler.

The reasons remain debated by historians, though most agree that no single incident was responsible. Tavern owners accused her of encouraging excessive celebrations, starting impromptu singing contests that lasted until dawn, disguising livestock as local officials, and repeatedly refusing to pay for drinks because she considered entertaining the patrons to be sufficient compensation.

The final straw is said to have occurred when Mailaedle convinced an entire tavern that a wealthy merchant was actually an exiled prince living under an assumed identity. The resulting chaos nearly caused a riot and cost the establishment several weeks of business. Within months tavern owners across the nation had collectively agreed to deny her entry.

Mailaedle reportedly treated the ban as a badge of honor.

According to one popular story, she responded by hosting outdoor feasts directly across the street from taverns and inviting their customers to join her.

Despite her reputation as a prankster, Mailaedle's contributions to Ezuler were substantial. She mediated disputes between villages, protected trade caravans, recovered stolen treasures, and helped map previously unexplored regions. Her adventures inspired generations of young gnomes to pursue lives of exploration and service.

As the decades passed, Mailaedle became a symbol of Ezuler itself—bold, independent, and unwilling to bow to authority. Even in old age she remained active, traveling widely and sharing stories of her exploits with younger generations.

Her remarkable life came to a tragic end on Nivalisary 18, Year 1575. By then she had become one of the most famous individuals in the history of Ezuler. Her success, popularity, and enduring reputation had also earned her enemies.

Historical records state only that she was poisoned by a jealous rival. The identity of the culprit was never conclusively established. Some accounts blame a disgraced adventurer whose accomplishments had been overshadowed by Mailaedle's fame. Others suggest a political figure embarrassed by one of her public criticisms. Whatever the truth, the poisoning shocked the nation.

Mailaedle died at the age of 102.

News of her death spread rapidly across Ezuler. Thousands attended memorial ceremonies, and countless songs were composed in her honor. Ironically, several taverns that had once banned her held commemorative gatherings celebrating her life.

Today Mailaedle Codtamer remains one of Ezuler's most beloved heroes. Statues, ballads, and children's stories preserve her memory, while her adventures continue to inspire dreamers, explorers, and rebels alike.
