Burgundy Leaf Shrub

Shrub type: Deciduous (Stores water in the thickened base of its stem)

This short shrub grows up to 1 foot (30.5 cm) tall and lives for around 44 years. It is very resistant to disease but is susceptible to destructive insect infestation.

It has many stocky, wavy stems covered in hard, smooth, black bark, and the wood inside is yellow-brown.

The branches are long and thick with hundreds of twigs that and are covered with small amounts of huge, very thick, leaves with jagged edges. The leaves themselves are a shade of burgundy that gradient shifts to cream at the top, durable and crispy.

It produces several small, aquamarine flowers with umbrella-shaped shaped petals. They are sturdy and have an intensely strong scent that smells like rotting meat. In late summer it forms tinypastel red, tough-shelled seeds.


It is suitable for use as a construction material
It grows well in the sun and full shade.
