This enormous vine is a slow growing plant, with the largest known specimen reaching a length of 3,071 feet (936.0 meters) and growing as high as 644 feet (196.3 meters).

It takes 45 years for the red stems to mature, by which point they can have a diameter of 3.4 feet (1.0 meters) and are smooth and slick.

The needle-like, sticky leaves reach up to 3.6 feet (1.1 meters) in length. They are generally cream, and have smooth edges.

During late spring, the vine produces copious amounts of average lilac flowers.

It is suitable for making baskets and the like
It only grows on the most fertile lands.
It makes a distinctive sound when the wind blows through it.
