This black moss is commonly found blanketing medium-sized areas In heathlands.
It is short, growing up to 2 inches (5 cm) tall. It forms in sparse patches and they overwhelm an area rapidly, and is very flimsy.
When mature, emerald crescent-shaped capsules grow at the end of short, lime green sporophytes, eventually opening up during the mid-summer to release thousands of spores; it can cause allergic reactions.

It comes in 8 varieties, each with a different petal colour.
It is almost impossible to grow from cuttings.
It is suitable for creating flexible, durable textiles
