Bluefruit Tree

This short fruit tree grows up to 7 feet (2.1 meters) tall and lives for up to 30 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 58 years old. It is susceptible to disease and destructive insect infestation.

It has a thick, wavy trunk covered in delicate, waxy, brown-green speckled bark, and inside, the hard wood is pale brown.

The branches are short, rigid and upright and are covered with handfuls of tiny, wide leaves with tattered edges. The leaves themselves are generally azure.

In early spring, it produces hundreds of giant, violet blossoms with spear shaped petals with a tube-like floral cup. They are sturdy and have a fairly strong scent that smells like pine needles.

In mid-summer it produces small, needle-like fruit. The hairy blue skin is stretchy and edible when roasted; it is sweet, and the very soft blue flesh is spicy and juicy. The ashy red seed is large and is in the centre of the fruit.

The roots are fine and grow in a large web, and overall the tree is sturdy and rigid.

Forests of this species feature the trees packed together, with the space between filled with undergrowth.
