Yellow Spike

This small caudiciform grows up to 11 feet (3.4 meters) tall. The perforated stem is gray-green, and is covered in hundreds of rigid pale yellow spines. It has a straight, wide, hazel trunk atop a narrow tripod of silky, exposed roots. The branches are narrow and yellow or intense blue and are short, rigid and upright.

The wavy-edged, slender, pointed leaves are beige at the bottom and light grey with lime lines at the top. They are flimsy, but are very difficult to pull away.

It is fast growing, taking 4 months to reach maturity. Once mature, several flowers with crimson petals and a yellow center grow at the top, reappearing every year. The flower head is shaped like a cube with 29 raised, round-tipped petals. It has a weak scent that smells like fruity.

The caudiciform's skin is thin, the orange flesh is rubbery, and the light grey sap is thin and causes diarrhea if consumed.
