Crimson Trumpet

Flower type: Perennial (Stores water in its stem)

This short flower grows up to 4 inches (10 cm) tall. Its sky blue or crimson stem is thick, and the small, copper leaves are white on the underside and are spear shaped with wavy edges. A pair of leaves grow at the base of the flower head.

1 to 6 small flowers grow on alternate sides up the length of the stem. The flowers are 6 cm (2.4 inches) wide, with petals that are generally peach; each flower tends to be a variation of this colour. The flower head is made up of handfuls of petals; the lower layer of petals are flat, while the upper layers form a tight trumpet. They are sturdy.

It has a weak scent that smells like blood, and it has very little pollen. It is pollinated by insects and is visited by a large variety of them.


It spreads easily and often blanket large areas.
