Mahogany

This short fruit tree grows up to 7 feet (2.1 meters) tall and lives for up to 20 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 43 years old. It is susceptible to disease and destructive insect infestation.

It has a wide, straight trunk covered in thick, silky, mahogany-coloured bark, and inside, the soft wood is pale brown.

The tangled mess of branches are short stubs and are covered with large amounts of giant, slender, pointed leaves with wavy edges. The leaves themselves are gold and pink.

In early spring, it produces lots of medium-sized, ashy green blossoms with circular petals with a tube-like floral cup. They are very delicate and have a weak scent that smells like rich perfume.

In early summer it produces small, long, narrow fruit. The fuzzy subtle orange skin is peel-able and inedible, and the very soft lilac flesh is spicy and salty and syrupy. The faded red seed is tiny and sits at the top of the fruit.

The roots form a tightly packed ball, and overall the tree is sturdy, flexible, and difficult to uproot or break.

Forests of this species feature well-spaced trees, with clear space between them.
