Its red stem is very thin, and the small, moss green leaves are pleated with smooth edges. Many leaves grow at the base of the stem, and more leaves grow in pairs along the length of the stem.
A single large flower sits at the end of the stem. The flowers are 6 cm (2.4 inches) wide, with petals that are bronze on the underside and blue on the top. The flower head is an uncoordinated mess of 24 curved petals. They are very delicate.
It has a weak scent that smells like musk, and it has very little pollen; it does not cause any allergic reactions. It is pollinated by the wind.
