Copperberry

This modest-sized fruit tree grows up to 10 feet (3.0 meters) tall and lives for up to 30 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 53 years old. It is very resistant to disease but is susceptible to destructive insect infestation.

It has a sturdy, wonky trunk covered in thick, waxy, burgundy and brown bark, and inside, the soft wood is copper-coloured.

The abundance of branches are long and thin and are covered with copious amounts of tiny, slender, pointed leaves with smooth edges. The leaves themselves are vivid red and caramel.

In early spring, it produces thousands of large, crimson blossoms with broad, flat petals. They are sturdy and have a mildly strong scent that smells like rainy days.

In late summer it produces , long, narrow fruit. The rubbery beige skin is delicate and inedible, and the slightly crunchy white flesh is savoury and very dry. The muted green seeds are tiny and are scattered throughout the fruit.

The roots spread far and go deep underground, and overall the tree is sturdy, flexible, and difficult to uproot or break.

Forests of this species feature well-spaced trees, with clear space between them.
