Desert Lily

Flower type: Annual (Stores water in the thickened base of its stem)

This short flower grows up to 4 inches (10 cm) tall. Its lime green stem is thin and splits into dozens of branching stems three quarters of the way up, and the large, orange-yellow leaves are brown on the underside and are slender, pointed with smooth edges. Many leaves grow at the base of the stem, and a pair of leaves grow at the base of the flower head.

A single tiny flower sits at the end of the stem. The flowers are 2 cm (0.8 inches) wide, with petals that are light grey on the underside and lilac on the top. The flower head is made up of handfuls of petals; the lower layer of petals are flat, while the upper layers form a tight bowl. They fall easily.

It has a weak scent that smells like baby powder, and it has a fair amount of pollen. It is pollinated by insects , but only one species in particular.

It can survive a very long time without water.
