Bloodfruit Tree

Fruit Tree type: Deciduous (Stores water in the thickened base of its stem)

This short fruit tree grows up to 8 feet (2.4 meters) tall and lives for up to 10 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 27 years old. It is very resistant to destructive insect infestation but susceptible to disease.

It has a thick, straight trunk covered in very thick, ridged, dark brown bark, and inside, the dense wood is pine-coloured.

The abundance of branches are tall, rigid and upright and are covered with handfuls of small, long, narrow leaves with toothed edges. The leaves themselves are either lilac, or blood red with violet streaks.

In early spring, it produces hundreds of medium-sized, yellow blossoms with heart-shaped shaped petals. They are very delicate and have a strong scent that smells like a man.

In mid-summer it produces , 9 pointed fruit. The leathery brown skin is thin and edible when roasted; it is sweet, and the very soft blood red flesh is sour and syrupy. The beige seeds are large and are dotted around on the skin of the fruit.

The roots are fine and grow in a large web, and overall the tree is sturdy and difficult to uproot.

Forests of this species feature the trees packed together densely, with the space between filled with undergrowth.

It is almost impossible to grow indoors.
It comes in 5 varieties, each with a different leaf colour.
It is suitable for making baskets and the like
