Burgundy-Brown

This modest-sized shrub grows up to 3 feet (91.4 cm) tall and lives for around 40 years. It is very susceptible to disease and insect infestation.

It has dozens of wide, straight stems covered in fine, waxy, dark green bark, and the wood inside is burgundy-brown.

The branches are long and slender with thousands of twigs that and are covered with large amounts of large, perforated, leaves with rounded edges. The leaves themselves are olive at the bottom and silver with cream lines at the top, resilient and rough.

In early spring it produces many clusters of giant, hazel blossoms with stiff, pointed petals with a trumpet-shaped floral cup. They detach easily and have a strong scent that smells like old books.

In mid-autumn oval fruits ripen. The leathery turquoise skin is stretchy and inedible, and the very soft magenta flesh is sweet and very juicy. The grey seeds are small and are dotted around on the skin of the fruit.
