Crimson Fanflower

Flower type: Biennial (Stores water in its leaves)

This small flower grows up to 1 inch (3 cm) tall. Its orange-yellow stem is very thick and splits into 4 branching stems halfway up, and the large, red leaves are dark yellow-green on the underside and are fan-like with jagged edges. Many leaves grow at the base of the stem, and more leaves grow in pairs along the length of the stem.

A single giant flower sits at the end of the stem. The flowers are 3 cm (1.2 inches) wide, with petals that are olive on the underside and crimson on the top. The flower head is an uncoordinated mess of up to 20 curved petals. They are hardy.

It has a delicate scent that smells like old books, and it has a fair amount of pollen; it does not cause many allergic reactions. It is pollinated by insects and is particularly attractive to butterflies.
