Copperflower

This small flower grows up to 4 inches (10 cm) tall. Its copper stem is wispy and straight, and the huge, pink-red leaves are 8 pointed with jagged edges. The leaves grow in pairs along the length of the stem.

Each stem splits 3 to 5 times; a single tiny flower grows at the end of each split. The flowers are 11 cm (4.3 inches) wide, with solid brilliant purple petals decorated with brilliant purple lines and a hazel central disk. The flower head is largely flat with 32 tightly layered round-tipped petals. They are hardy.

It has a fairly strong scent that smells like cigarette smoke, and it has very little pollen, but can cause severe allergic reactions. It is pollinated by insects , but is also visited by a small species of bird.
