Bluebell

Flower type: Biennial (Stores water in its leaves)

This small flower grows up to 4 inches (10 cm) tall. Its white stem is very thick, and the tiny, gray leaves are stiff, pointed with rounded edges. Many leaves grow at the base of the stem, and more leaves alternate on the stem from about halfway up, up to the flower head.

Many tiny flowers grow in bunches along the stem. The flowers are 3 cm (1.2 inches) wide, with blue petals and a vivid blue central disk. The flower head is shaped like a tube made up of several tightly layered, narrow petals. They are hardy.

It has a delicate scent that smells like coffee, and it has very little pollen, but can cause severe allergic reactions. It is pollinated by a small species of bird, but is also visited by a variety of insects.

It makes a distinctive sound when the wind blows through it.
