Crimson Cupflower

Flower type: Annual (Grows along the ground or other low surfaces.)

This small flower grows up to 4 inches (10 cm) tall. Its yellow-green stem is very thin and splits into 6 branching stems a quarter of the way up, and the miniature, red leaves are slender, pointed with smooth edges. The leaves grow in pairs along the length of the stem.

Dozens of tiny flowers grow in bunches along the stem. The flowers are 19 cm (7.5 inches) wide, with each petal a slightly different shade of crimson. The flower head is shaped like a cup with 46 widely spaced, narrow petals. They are very delicate.

It has an overpowering scent that smells like rotten meat, and it has an average amount of pollen; it can cause allergic reactions. It is pollinated by a small species of bird.

The bark is frequently covered in moss.
