Copperbrush

Shrub type: Deciduous (Grows upwards by winding itself around other objects and plants.)

This small shrub grows up to 1 foot (30.5 cm) tall and lives for around 33 years. It is very resistant to disease but is susceptible to destructive insect infestation.

It has dozens of knobbly, angular stems covered in thick, knobbly, copper-coloured bark, and the wood inside is dark brown.

The branches are short and slender with thousands of twigs that and are covered with large amounts of tiny, very thin, leaves with toothed edges. The leaves themselves are dark brown with muted purple tips, delicate and covered in fine hairs.

In early summer it produces large amounts of small, muted red blossoms with circular petals. They fall easily and have no scent.

In late winter tiny oval fruits ripen. The clammy copper skin is tough and inedible, and the soft cream flesh is spicy and sour and powdery. The blood red seed is large and sits at the top of the fruit.

It comes in 80 varieties.
All parts of the tree are edible.
