This red moss is commonly found blanketing medium-sized areas On rotten logs.
It is short, growing up to 2 inches (5 cm) tall. It forms in sparse patches and they are exceptionally hardy, and is slightly durable.
When mature, emerald crescent-shaped capsules grow at the end of short, lime green sporophytes, eventually opening up during the mid-autumn to release dozens of spores; it can cause severe allergic reactions.

Several parts of the shrub have medicinal properties.
It usually houses a colony of beneficial insects.
It is suitable for making baskets and the like
