This burgundy moss is commonly found growing in small clumps In heathlands.
It is small, growing up to 3 inches (8 cm) tall. It forms in thin clumps, and is slightly resilient; it can easily endure flooding and draughts.
When mature, emerald spiral capsules grow at the end of elongated, lime green sporophytes, eventually opening up during the mid-autumn to release thousands of spores; it does not cause many allergic reactions.

It is difficult to kill and will quickly regrow if cut.
It is difficult to cut through.
It is suitable for making strong rope
