This modest-sized bine is a steady-growing plant, with the largest known specimen reaching a length of 45 feet (13.7 meters)0. It prefers to grow on man-made objects.

It takes 11 months for the orange stems to mature, by which point they can have a diameter of 3 inches (8 cm) and are tough and woody.

The very thin, smooth leaves reach up to 1.7 feet (51 cm) in length. They are solid turquoise with bronze patches, and have toothed edges.

The colour changes depends on whether the soil is acidic or alkaline.
