This small leaf succulent grows up to 5 feet (1.5 meters) tall. The finger-like stem is copper, and is covered in thick bunches of rigid bronze spines. The lumpy leaves are solid grey with dark brown dots. Small amounts of them grow on stumpy, gray-green branches that are short stubs. The leaves are flexible, and do not detach easily.

Once mature, a handful of flowers, with alternating petals of deep blue and indigo, with an amber central disk, grow at the top, reappearing once every 5 years. The flower head is made up of 24 petals; the lower layer of petals are flat, while the upper layers form a tight heart. It has a scent that varies in strength that smells like chocolate.

The leaf succulent's skin is thin, the pale green flesh is smooth, and the orange sap is thin.
