Flower type: Biennial (Stores water in its stem)This large flower grows up to 5.6 feet (1.7 meters) tall. Its orange-yellow or subtle red stem is thin and straight with a curved tip, and the large, pink-red leaves are dark grey on the underside and are spear shaped with wavy edges. A pair of leaves grow at the base of the flower head.
5 to 7 medium-sized flowers grow on alternate sides up the length of the stem. The flowers are 10 cm (3.9 inches) wide, with solid copper petals decorated with bright yellow lines and a sky blue central disk. The flower head is shaped like a heart with 57 tightly layered, narrow petals. They are hardy.
It has a scent that varies in strength that smells like vanilla, and it has lots of pollen. It is pollinated by insects and is particularly attractive to bees.
It is almost impossible to grow indoors.
