Bluefire Caudex

Succulent type: Caudiciform (Stores water in the thickened base of its stem)

This modest-sized caudiciform grows up to 17 feet (5.2 meters) tall. The thick stem is gray-green, and is dotted with small dark grey spines. The very thick, orange trunk can grow to as much as 17 feet (5.2 meters) in diameter. Its gold or aquamarine branches are short and slender.

The smooth-edged, pleated leaves are sky blue at the bottom and grey with blood red patches at the top. They are strong, and detach easily.

It is slow growing, taking 23 years to reach maturity. Once mature, and only under the right conditions, a single flower with blue petals and a blue central disk grows at the top, reappearing after 3 years, but only when the conditions are right again. The flower head is an uncoordinated mess of 23 curved petals. It has a scent whose strength depends on external factors, such as soil quality and rain frequency that smells like perfume.

The caudiciform's skin is thin, the grey flesh is rough, and the ashy orange sap is thin.

It absorbs an exceptionally large amount of water each day.
