This green moss is commonly found growing in medium-sized clumps In rainy mountain ranges, On rotten logs, and On trees.
It is small, growing up to 1 inch (3 cm) tall. It forms in sparse patches, and is very rigid; it struggles more than most during dry spells.
When mature, emerald oblong capsules grow at the end of long, lime green sporophytes, eventually opening up during the mid-autumn to release thousands of spores; it does not cause any allergic reactions.

It absorbs an exceptionally large amount of water each day.
A particular bird species likes to nest in it.
