Blueberry Tree

This large fruit tree grows up to 40 feet (12.2 meters) tall and lives for up to 30 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 51 years old. It is somewhat resistant to disease and destructive insect infestation.

It has a knobbly, slanted trunk covered in thick, waxy, gray bark, and inside, the dense wood is pale brown-grey.

The numerous branches are tall, rigid and upright and are covered with large amounts of miniature, sickle shaped leaves with smooth edges. The leaves themselves are solid blue with pink splotches.

In early spring, it produces copious amounts of medium-sized, indigo blossoms with needle-like petals with a bell-shaped floral cup. They detach easily and have the faintest scent that smells like musk.

In late autumn it produces large, long, tapering fruit. The fuzzy turquoise skin is thin and edible when roasted; it is spicy, and the slightly crunchy blue flesh is salty and oily. The brown seeds are tiny and are scattered throughout the fruit.

The roots form a tightly packed ball, and overall the tree is sturdy and difficult to uproot.

Forests of this species feature the trees packed together densely, with grassy ground between them.
