This brown or cream moss is commonly found blanketing small areas In bogs.
It is short, growing up to 2 inches (5 cm) tall. It forms in thick clumps, and is extremely sturdy.
When mature, emerald shield-shaped capsules grow at the end of elongated, lime green sporophytes, eventually opening up during the early summer to release thousands of spores.

Several parts of the fruit tree have medicinal properties.
It can flourish even in standing water.
