Indigo

This colossal fruit tree grows up to 75 feet (22.9 meters) tall and lives for up to 45 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 84 years old. It is susceptible to disease and destructive insect infestation.

It has a long and flexible, wonky trunk covered in hard, wrinkled, dark gray bark, and inside, the soft wood is mahogany-coloured.

The small handful of branches are very short, thin and wispy and are covered with sparse amounts of miniature, asymmetrical leaves with jagged edges. The leaves themselves are either indigo or pink, with white edges.

In early spring, it produces large amounts of small, dark grey blossoms with long, narrow petals with a bell-shaped floral cup. They are very delicate and have a soft scent that smells like glue.

In mid-summer it produces small, asymmetrical fruit. The clammy olive skin is thin and inedible, and the very soft light blue flesh is sweet and dry. The brown seeds are large and are scattered throughout the fruit.

The roots are shallow and widely spread, and overall the tree is sturdy and difficult to uproot.

Forests of this species feature the trees packed together, with patches of undergrowth between them.
