Clinging Indigo Bloom

Flower type: Annual (Grows upwards by clinging to almost any surface.)

This small flower grows up to 4 inches (10 cm) tall. Its silver stems grow from the base of the plant in bunches of 3 and are thick and straight, and split into many branching stems at the top, and the tiny, gray-green leaves are pleated with irregular edges. Many leaves grow at the base of the stem, and more leaves grow in pairs along the length of the stem.

Dozens of large flowers grow in a bunch at the end of the stem. The flowers are 6 cm (2.4 inches) wide, with indigo petals and a purple central disk. The flower head is made up of dozens of petals in raised layers. They detach easily.

It has a scent that varies in strength that smells like fresh linen, and it has a modest amount of pollen; it can cause severe allergic reactions. It is pollinated by the wind, but is also particularly attractive to butterflies.
