This lilac moss is commonly found growing in large clumps In heathlands, and In rainy mountain ranges.

When mature, emerald flame-shaped capsules grow at the end of short, lime green sporophytes, eventually opening up during the late autumn to release millions of spores.

Once on fire, it burns very quickly.
