Crimson Pine

This small shrub grows up to 1 foot (30.5 cm) tall and lives for decades, with the oldest known specimen being around 166 years old. It is very resistant to disease but is susceptible to destructive insect infestation.

It has many long and flexible, angular stems covered in thick, wrinkled, pine-coloured bark, and the wood inside is black.

The branches are tall, rigid and upright that and are covered with small amounts of giant, long, tapering, leaves with serrated edges. The leaves themselves are drab green with beige tips, delicate and smooth.

In mid-spring it produces many medium-sized, crimson flowers with slender, pointed petals with a trumpet-shaped floral cup. They detach easily and have a scent that varies in strength that smells like pine needles.
